Vermont and Chittenden County consistently are recognized by national media as healthy places to live. While our quality of life is high and our collective health is good, these rankings do not reflect the health challenges faced by many people in our community.
“The Health Disparities of Vermonters”, the 2010 report published by the Vermont Department of Health, confirmed that people with lower income and less education face significant challenges to stay healthy. The report found these and other "social determinants of health" have created alarming health disparities in our population.
After years of relying on the medical community to maintain people’s health, decision makers from all sectors are now reviewing health disparities data, collaborating on addressing the social determinants of health – including income, education, the built environment, and race, ethnicity and cultural identity.
Through our Changing Face of Chittenden County project, the Champlain Initiative and our partners offer:
